We have had the hottest day in February since the year 2006 and the warmest winter till date. Going by the weather trends, we sure are in for a hot summer month and it would help us to gear up for it accordingly.

Now I am the last person to tell you how to get a ‘whiter’ skin. So if you think this blog is about ways to make you a shade whiter, do not read further. What I am about to tell you is how you can embrace your true skin colour and protect it from the sun damage, tanning being one of the many ill effects. Even if you like the sun tanned look like the westerners, make note that the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun is in no way good for your skin. Sun damage also leads to blemishes, dark spots, redness (hyper pigmentation) and makes the skin sensitive.

Here are some DIY natural anti tanning masks that will help you with the sun damage:

Gram Flour Mask

Besan or gram flour is a staple in every house. Our moms may have advised us to use it to wash our face instead of soap. You can make a pack by simply mixing two tablespoons of besan with 1 and a half tablespoon of yogurt and one tablespoon of aloe vera gel. Mix them in a bowl into a fine paste and apply this on your face, neck, hands and feet. Let it dry. Wash off with cold water.

Saffron and Milk Mask

Saffron is a common ingredient in most of the Ayurvedic brands, especially the expensive ones. It is a great ingredient for removing tan and has additional benefits like cell repairing properties, preventing high blood pressure and heart diseases, preventing acne and blemishes. All you have to do is mix 4-5 tablespoons of warm milk, few strands of saffron and 2-3 drops of lime juice. Apply this on your exposed areas of the skin and leave it for 10 minutes. Wash off with cold water.

Cucumber Mask

Juice half a cucumber and mix it with equal parts of rose water. Add two teaspoons of lemon juice and apply this all over. Leave it for 15-20 minutes and rinse it off. You can do this 2-3 times a week for best results.

Tomato-Yogurt Mask

Blend a medium sized ripe tomato and mix it with one tablespoon of yogurt. Also add one tablespoon of lemon juice and blend it again in the mixture. Apply it and leave in for 15-20 minutes. You can also use this mask a few times a week for best results.

Aloe Vera Mask

Benefits of aloe vera on the skin and the hair are very well known. Not just in herbal concoctions, aloe vera finds its usage in most of the major cosmetic brands. All you have to do mix equal parts of aloe vera gel and drops from lemon. Apply it all over and leave it for 20 minutes. Wash off with cold water. Since aloe vera gel is great at moisturising the skin as well, you don’t have to apply one after you wash off the pack.

Papaya Mask

This delicious fruit is not just great for the skin, but also for the hair. Papaya contains the enzyme papain which helps softening the skin, removes blemishes and spots and also removes the tan. Take half a cup of ripe papaya mashed well and mix it with one tablespoon of honey. Apply it on your face and skin, leave it for 15-20 minutes and wash it off with cold water.

Oatmeal Mask

Oatmeal is great for health and it is also a skin exfoliator. If you don’t have the time, this is a great fix. Mix two tablespoons of oat meal (not flavoured) and three tablespoons of buttermilk. Scrub you skin for 15-20 minutes with this mix and wash off. Alternatively, you can also use honey instead of buttermilk.
